Family History Research
I can give you advice by email or telephone, do research for you at archives and on the internet, and compile family trees and family histories. My research is tailored to your individual requirements. It may involve focusing on a specific research hurdle, tracing one surname back as far as possible or researching all your ancestral lines, with the number of surnames doubling in each generation. In every case I will work with you to establish what you already know, identify clear research objectives and develop a research plan which suits your personal circumstances. I will also help you decide on how to present the results of the research.
Tracing Living Relatives
I have particular expertise in tracing living relatives. My work includes tracing people for inheritance cases, tracing living descendants of people of historical interest and helping families who have lost touch with each other. I also search for birth parents for people who have been adopted. Counselling and support are important in these cases and I recommend the Adoption, Search & Reunion website as a starting point.
House History Research
My work has included large houses and humble cottages. With each house history I aim to:
- Establish when the house was built and by whom
- Document any significant alterations
- Find any surviving maps, deeds, plans, historic prints or photographs
- Identify previous owners and occupiers and provide biographical information
I offer one hour of free consultation and preparation for a project. Thereafter I charge £30 an hour, which includes time spent on preparation, research, documentation, analysis and reporting. Depending on distance, I may charge for travelling time, as well as for expenses such as purchasing certificates, photocopying and postage. Where travel is required, mileage is charged at the standard HMRC rate, currently 45p per mile. Before starting research, I will agree with you an upper limit on the number of hours to be worked. I will also obtain your agreement in advance to any chargeable expenses. In this way, the final bill will always be under your control.
Talks to Clubs and Societies
I give talks to clubs and societies on a wide range of subjects. I charge a speaking fee of £50 plus mileage from my home in Portishead. I also require signature of a speaking contract. Details of forthcoming talks can be found in my diary. Topics I offer include:
